Once upon a time there lived a woman called Sarah who was brought up in the countryside in England by self sufficiency enthusiastic parents. As a child she knew clean air, organic home produced foods, talking to animals and walking barefoot in beautiful food laden gardens as the norm. She sang to the trees and the birds as she danced through life, without a care in the world – until she started school which stifled her and baffled her because many things that were taught had no relevance to her life – but she did as she was told – was a good girl – and went. She performed quite well in the exams the were considered important but she felt like something really was missing.
In her teenage years she spent time dreaming – dreaming of how life could be living in communities instead of individual lonely houses or flats which she saw were prisons to some people. She saw stories of terrible things being done to the Earth and people when she watched the tell-lie-vision and she wrote this song.
I don’t want diamonds and I don’t want gold
I just want somebody to hold
Someone to love and hold my hand
So we can build a home on a patch of land
A land where freedom doesn’t have to cost lives
And people in power speak truth not lies
Where women and men can be who they want to be
Without oppression or brutality
Is this too much to ask for in this life
Is this too much to ask for in this life
I don’t want diamonds and I don’t want gold
I just want somebody to hold
Someone to love and hold my hand
So we can build a home on a patch of land
A patch of land in a beautiful place
That is clean and has water not polluted by waste
I want to feel safe with my love by my side
Don’t want to know terror or feel the need to hide
Is this too much to ask for in this life
Is this too much to ask for in this life
I don’t want diamonds and I don’t want gold
I just want somebody to hold
Someone to love and hold my hand
So we can build a home on a patch of land
Where my skin is kept warm by the sun in the sky
And no-one to say what I can’t do and why
Is this too much to ask for in this life
Is this too much to ask for in this life
Is this too much to ask for in this life
Is this too much to ask for in this life
I don’t want diamonds and I don’t want gold
I just want somebody to hold
Someone to love and hold my hand
So we can build a home on a patch of land
A land where freedom doesn’t have to cost lives
And people in power speak truth not lies
Where women and men can be who they want to be
Without oppression or brutality
Is this too much to ask for in this life
